Bodyboardshop.com was started in 1999 by Australia ’s first World Champion Bodyboarder, Michael Eppelstun and his wife Krista. The idea was to make bodyboards, accessories, and bodyboarding brand clothing available to the world through the ease of online shopping. Through first hand experience and from comments by other bodyboarding friends they knew the frustration of having so many Surf Shops all over the world, but none stocking a reasonable amount of bodyboarding equipment. With Bodyboarding’s rapid worldwide growth as a recreational and professional sport, there were also emerging “Bodyboarding Brands” of clothing, “No Friends” being the first. Just like the Surfing labels such as “Billabong” over 20 years ago, these new brands were representing a new and growing alternative culture and it was hard for them to find sale outlets. Most traditional “Surf Shops” would not give the labels a chance because of the old school and sometimes arrogant attitude of surfers towards bodyboarders. We believed that for the sports growth to continue, there needed to be “Bodyboard” Specialist shops, just like surf shops, skate shops and ski shops. Shops that were owned and run by people that were passionate about the sport and would support all aspects of it’s industry from emerging clothing and hardware labels, sponsorship of it’s riders, and assistance in the development of the contest infrastructure.
